About Us

In case you were wondering who and what we are, read on.

What is the Texas Alliance of Pagan Students (TAPS)?

TAPS is a group of college students, sponsors, and allies dedicated to helping foster cooperation between college students and student orgs in Texas, and to help fledgling college organizations get going.  Within the originating members as of 2014, we have a total combined experience of well over 100 years working with student groups, both religious and non-religious.

What is a Pagan?

This is a very broad question, and one which requires a number of different answers.  The term "Pagan" means many things to many people.  At its very basic level, a pagan is one who recognizes (if not worships) more than one deity, or recognizes the self as deity. Pagan paths are often very nature-centered, though not always. Among the more common Pagan paths are Wicca, Asatru, Heathenism, and the "Solitary Eclectic" path. Many Native American spiritual paths are recognized as Pagan paths, as well.

Why a state-wide Alliance?

We're so glad you asked!  Over time, it became quite apparent that rather than cooperation between local student orgs, there was an air of competition.  The leadership of both of the charter orgs decided that it was time for this to stop.  There is no reason we should not be acting in solidarity and cooperation, so the leadership of both the Austin PSA and the PSF of Texas State University got together and dreamed up the Texas Alliance of Pagan Students.

Our first gathering took place at CMA Samhain, where representatives from the two charter orgs met with representatives from the POE in Corpus Christi (from Del Mar College and TAMU-CC), and other students from UTSA and Huston Tillotson.  TAPS was officially born on October 17, 2014 in Flatonia, TX, at 11:48 AM.

What are the goals of TAPS?

Currently, the goal is to gather members and get the word out about the organization. We will be hosting our 3rd Annual TAPS Conference and Retreat in February of 2019. Watch our website for upcoming info!

Future plans include:
  • TAPS gatherings at sponsored events like the Austin Pagan Pride Day
  • Student-led, student-driven events such as a yearly conference (halfway there!)
  • Camping weekends at various locations around the state
